San Dimas Seeks Injunction for Zero-Bail to Prioritize Public Safety

CITY OF SAN DIMAS DECLARES URGENT CONCERN OVER ZERO-BAIL SCHEDULE, PUSHES FOR INJUNCTION TO PRIORITIZE PUBLIC SAFETY

San Dimas, CA — The San Dimas City Council, in a special session, voted unanimously to align with other cities in Los Angeles County, to sound the alarm on a new bail schedule that threatens to jeopardize public safety across the region. This schedule authorizes immediate release of individuals charged with various misdemeanors and non-violent felonies, sidelining the crucial evaluation of potential risks to the community. The delay in court appearances, sometimes stretching to months post-incident, creates a worrying void of oversight for a vast array of significant offenses, thereby heightening concerns among citizens and local police departments.

Residents and businesses, already bearing the brunt of rising lower-level offenses, are now faced with a zero-bail system that seemingly dismisses their safety and security. The City Council's move to halt this schedule underscores San Dimas's dedication to shielding its residents, businesses, and visitors from policies which place them at risk.

Included in the zero-bail system are offenses like auto thefts and burglaries, thefts irrespective of value, commercial thefts and break-ins, stolen property possession, forgery, and drug transactions, among others. Only a select few offenses, such as sexual battery, child or elder offenses, and crimes involving firearms, mandate a “magistrate review." Here, an on-call judge assesses the offender's history and other parameters electronically to determine whether immediate release or detention is warranted.

“It's our duty to voice our dissent when faced with policies that endanger our community's fabric,” stressed San Dimas Mayor Emmett Badar, echoing the sentiments of the San Dimas City Council. “This zero-bail agenda is merely a piece in a larger puzzle of decrees that chip away at public safety, giving rise to detrimental quality of life crimes."

Committed more than ever to public safety, the City of San Dimas will challenge any shift that undermines the city’s capacity to shield its residents and businesses. The San Dimas City Council appeals to communities and stakeholders to rally behind them and the ever-growing list of cities working to protect the public.  For more updates on the City of San Dimas's efforts and updates on this matter, please visit our website at www.sandimasca.gov.
