Since its incorporation in 1960, the unprecedented growth of San Dimas has transformed the City from an essentially rural area to a well-balanced community offering industrial, commercial, and residential living. In addition to the 1,700 acre Frank G. Bonelli Recreational Area which lies within the City boundaries, there are many parks such as San Dimas Canyon Park, a city-owned golf course (San Dimas Canyon Golf Club), and over 27 miles of equestrian trails for riding. The city services include an extensive recreational program for youth and for senior citizens, and the City boasts a new modern City Hall, with excellent provisions made for County Sheriff and Fire Departments, along with a fine Los Angeles County Library and Engineering Regional Office.

San Dimas acknowledges that the community has a character that is enhanced by the preservation of its history, historical buildings, and terrain. The City serves as a resource giving all people a sense of belonging to the City through programs, organizations, and activities.

Informational Update on 740 E Foothill Boulevard

On July 6, 2023, the City Councils for the cities of San Dimas and La Verne met in a joint meeting regarding the proposed permanent supportive housing project by National CORE located at 740 E. Foothill Boulevard in the unincorporated Los Angeles County area between the two cities. Supervisor Kathryn Barger, Fifth District Supervisor, and representatives from the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning, Los Angeles Community Development Authority, and Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority were present to report and answer questions in addition to the project developer, National CORE.

As a result of that meeting, the City Managers for San Dimas and La Verne met in good faith with representatives of National CORE, along with representatives from Supervisor Barger’s office, to review the potential of alternative locations for the proposed housing development based on the concerns of the City Councils and community. At that meeting on July 19, 2023, held at the City of La Verne, potential sites were discussed with National CORE and additional time was provided to assess the viability of relocating from the 740 E. Foothill Boulevard site.

During follow-up discussions held on August 14, 2023, National CORE informed the Cities that they intend to continue the process for the development of 740 E. Foothill Boulevard because no other property was determined to be a viable site, due to funding and other development parameters. The two Cities understand that National CORE continues to revise the proposed project based on community engagement and feedback, to include minimizing the five-story building, increasing setbacks from neighboring uses, and addressing the lack of parking for the site. However, no new development proposal has been submitted to the County at this time.

The two Cities, through their City Managers, continue to engage with National CORE; however, such engagement does not reflect support by the Cities for the project. Both City Councils maintain their opposition to the project.
