Meals for Seniors
If you are interested in being a part of the Senior Lunch Program, call (909) 394-6290. Participants will be able to pick up their lunch curbside on Wednesdays between 10:30 am – 1 pm outside of the entry doors of the Multi-purpose lunchroom and will receive a five-day supply of boxed lunches and frozen meals.  Participants are encouraged to bring a tote bag to transport the boxed lunches and frozen meals provided.
Waste Management
Waste Management is continuing to provide their normal services. Should you need to contact them, call (800) 266-7551 for trash and recycling service questions, billing questions, bulky item pickups, and more. Below is an update on what Waste Management is doing to help the residents and businesses of San Dimas through the COVID-19 pandemic:

Solutions Focused on Service

  • By reducing the number of team members on the sorting line, slowing the down the material lines and keeping with approved protocols, Waste Management’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF) has resumed operations starting May 4
  • Temporarily suspended collection calls and service cut-offs for non-payment
  • Proactively reached out to commercial customers to reduce or increase service for impacted businesses
  • Accelerated investments in self-service options for greater customer ease such as  MyWM mobile app where you can keep tabs on your trash truck in real-time, manage your account and request services such as bulky item pickup

Service Impacts

  • As people have sheltered at home, residential trash volumes have increased at a rapid rate. More materials at the curb equal longer collection times and multiple trips to the landfill and transfer stations or MRFs for WM. This  means collection may occur later in the day
  • Local businesses are suspending, reducing, or canceling service. There is a potential reduction of franchise fees due to commercial and industrial business closures

Giving Back to our Communities

  • WM San Gabriel Valley District is donating $1,000 to the San Dimas Cares program to help residents in need of meals and essential services.
  • Recently, inspired by our employees’ desire to give back, we launched our ‘WM Million Meals campaign’ which was a two-week employee match program that raised funds for Feeding America and Food Banks Canada. Through our combined efforts, the WM family provided 1,895,820 meals to those experiencing food insecurity due to the pandemic

 Serving and Protecting our Employees

  • Adhering to the latest CDC and OSHA guidelines
  • Wage and benefit guarantees
  • Child care and elder care assistance
  • Internal processes reorganized to observe social distancing.  Providing sanitizer, masks and additional PPE for drivers
  • Created Call Centers fully operational with a work-from-home option (approx. 2,000 team members)

Donate/Volunteer
The City of San Dimas is looking for volunteers! With the Stay at Home Order in effect, we recognize that if you’re staying home, you’re already doing the best thing any of us can do to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. While we are urging the general public to stay at home, we cannot forget that our non-profit partners, who are providing life-sustaining services, are still in need of support. Volunteers are essential during this time. If you or an organization would like to volunteer, please contact (909) 394-6230 or sdcares@sandimasca.gov for opportunities.

Can’t Volunteer? Here are some ways you can help from home:

  • Adopt seniors in your neighborhood: Call or text your neighbors to see how they’re doing. Ask if they need help and offer to get them food or supplies, if you’re able. Drop off supplies on your neighbor’s porch to continue social distancing
  • Help others become more tech-savvy: Staying at home doesn’t have to mean social isolation. Offer to support your less tech-savvy friends, relatives, or neighbors by connecting them with others online. Call them and walk them through how to start or answer a video call through Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or other free platforms
  • Engage your kids to help spread joy: Have the kids create window art and beautify your house from the inside out. Consider using the CDC’s general principles when talking to children about COVID-19
Donate Blood
The American Red Cross now faces a severe blood shortage due to an unprecedented number of blood drive cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Healthy individuals are needed now to donate to help patients counting on lifesaving blood. Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the American Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-REDCROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa. The Red Cross has implemented new measures to ensure blood drives and donation centers are even safer for our donors and staff.
Phone Lines for Relief
On March 31, Governor Newsom announced the “Stay Home. Save Lives. Check In” campaign urging Californians to make telephone calls to check in on older Californians in their life. The goal is to make sure older and at-risk Californians are staying healthy, safe, and connected while they remain at home to save lives. In coordination with non-profit, local 2-1-1 systems, the State of California also launched a hotline to help Californians answer questions, (833) 544-2374. The hotline will be a one-stop-shop for queries and assistance during this crisis. The State is also partnering with AARP to send mailers to older residents, 65 and older, with useful resources and information to help adapt to the stay at home order.

211 LA is the central source for providing information and referrals for all health and human services in LA County. Our 2-1-1 phone line is open 24 hours, 7 days a week, with trained Community Resource Advisors prepared to offer help with any situation, any time. Our community services go far beyond phone referrals – explore our website to learn more. If you are calling from outside Los Angeles County or cannot directly dial 2-1-1, call (800) 339-6993.
Mental Health Resources
The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) supports the wellbeing of our County family, friends and colleagues. When you hear, read, or watch news about an outbreak of infectious disease, you may feel anxious and show signs of stress—even when the outbreak affects people far from where you live and you are at low or no risk of getting sick. These signs of stress are normal and may be more likely in people with loved ones in parts of the world affected by the outbreak. During an infectious disease outbreak, care for your own physical and mental health and reach out in kindness to those affected by the situation.

County residents may also download and use apps to practice self-care and support wellbeing on their mobile devices. A list of suggested apps is available in our “Your Wellbeing on Your Terms” brochure. LACDMH’s 24/7 Access Line at (800) 854-7771 is available to provide mental health support, resources and referrals.

Visit https://dmh.lacounty.gov/covid-19-information/ for more resources and information.

Project Roomkey Information
Please click here for an update on Project Roomkey from San Dimas Mayor Emmett Badar

Project Roomkey is a collaborative effort by the State, County and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to secure hotel and motel rooms for vulnerable people experiencing homelessness. It provides a way for people who don’t have a home to stay inside to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Project Roomkey aims to not only protect high-risk individuals but to also prevent the spread of the deadly virus in our communities and protect the capacity of our hospitals and healthcare system by providing a place for individuals to safely isolate. In this period of economic downturn and unemployment, Project Roomkey is also helping keep local businesses open and members of our community employed.
